Legal Recruitment in the UK: Our Observations

As legal recruiters, we are always talking to law firms, candidates and reviewing legal recruitment information and trends from many different sources, both formal and informal. This means we always have an up to date overview of the market. Over the past 12 months, we’ve identified a number of trends.

From our work with UK law firms, we have observed that:

  • law firms are increasingly willing to offer flexible working arrangements for the right candidate;
  • there is an up surge in demand for conveyancing solicitors, licensed conveyancers and conveyancing paralegals;
  • that after personal networks, social media platforms have become the most powerful recruitment tool;
  • law firms have become more conservative in their recruitment of fee earners, looking for fee-sharers or independent fee-earning consultant-roles rather than traditional salaried employees;
  • of all professional support roles, there has been an upsurge in demand for paralegals;
  • there is a significant increase in lawyer roles in all practice areas outside London; and
  • law firms placed more emphasis on blind recruitment techniques including requesting CVs stripped of data that can identify age, gender or religion.

From our work with candidates seeking new roles, we have observed that:

  • even highly qualified candidates still provide badly thought-out and sloppily drafted CVs;
  • candidates are more likely to seek flexibility in the form of working from home or a shorter work week;
  • candidates are not afraid to move jobs often to find the right employee;
  • there has been a slight increase in in-house lawyers wishing to return to private practice; and
  • candidates prefer blind recruitment techniques that strip their CVs of data identifying age, gender and religion.
